A Thangka is a hand-painted scroll painting of tantric Buddhism. In Tibetan it is called [than-ka], the word [than] means flat, and the suffix [ga] stands for painting. The Thangka is therefore a painting on a flat surface that can be rolled up and transported.
In Tibet, the Thangka is used for meditation or traditional ceremonies or as a portable teaching aid to illustrate the Buddhist philosophy of the nomadic population.

Tantric deities, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, protective deities, lamas, stories from life, Kalachakras (wheel of life) and mandalas are depicted. Thangkas are made according to precisely defined iconographic patterns. They are painted on canvas with water-soluble paints, both mineral and organic, obtained from coral, agate, sapphire, mother-of-pearl and gold.
